At the time, the town of about 8,000 people only consisted of 10% African Americans. At that time, Pierce became the first Black president of his high school. In 1948 he received his AB from Harvard College and in 1952 received his MD from the Harvard Medical School. After medical school, Pierce trained as a psychiatrist in Cincinnati, Ohio. Not only was Pierce well known throughout his academic career, but also found a balance between education and athletics. Pierce played on the Harvard College basketball, football, and lacrosse teams, where he was the first Black college football player to play below the Mason–Dixon line. This game, on October 11, 1947, was against an all-white University of Virginia team. Though Pierce remains modest about his accomplishments, it was a day that will always be remembered in History. In front of a crowd of 22,000, Pierce and the Crimson football team battled against racism and adversity to walk away with no major racial incidents. Though some fans heckled and harassed him for being Black, Pierce now says, “I don’t recall a hint of anything racial on the field. I remember nothing different in that game from any other I played at Harvard… It was no big deal and took no courage by me.” Friends and teammates constantly mention Pierce’s modesty. Alan Stone, Pierce’s backup tackle, said, “We all respected him. He was a very dignified fellow, and he was much more of a gentleman than anyone else on the team.” 60 years later, the University of Virginia awarded him the Vivian Pinn Distinguished Lecturer’s award for his achievements in the field of health disparities throughout his life. Although he comes off as a modest man, his teammates have never been slow to praise his accomplishments.
